1. Aims

Journal of Nursing and Public Health (JNPH) is an open-access, peer-reviewed scholarly journal dedicated to advancing knowledge, clinical practice, education, health services and policy in nursing and public health. Published by Unived Press, Universitas Dehasen Bengkulu, Indonesia, the journal provides an interdisciplinary forum for rigorous, original and ethically conducted research addressing the health of individuals, families, communities and populations across the lifespan.

The journal aims to disseminate evidence that improves the quality, safety, effectiveness, accessibility and equity of nursing care and public health programmes. It welcomes research with clear theoretical, methodological, clinical or policy relevance, including work in resource-constrained, rural and underserved settings, while recognising the wider international relevance of locally grounded evidence.

JNPH encourages collaboration among nurses, public health professionals, clinicians, educators, epidemiologists, health service managers, policymakers and researchers from related disciplines. Decisions are based on scholarly merit, methodological rigour, ethical compliance and relevance to the journal, rather than institutional affiliation or geographical origin.

2. Scope of Nursing Research

The nursing strand encompasses research into professional nursing practice, patient experiences, care quality and outcomes across healthcare and community settings. Areas of interest include:

  • Adult and medical-surgical nursing, chronic disease care and rehabilitation.
  • Emergency, critical care and disaster nursing.
  • Community and family nursing, home-based care and primary healthcare.
  • Gerontological nursing and healthy ageing.
  • Mental health and psychiatric nursing.
  • Paediatric, neonatal and maternity nursing.
  • Nursing leadership, management, workforce development and patient safety.
  • Nursing education, simulation, clinical competence and evidence-based practice.
  • Culturally appropriate, person-centred and family-centred nursing interventions.
  • Complementary and alternative approaches in nursing, where safety, effectiveness and ethical justification are rigorously assessed.

3. Scope of Public Health Research

The public health strand covers population health, disease prevention, health systems and the social and environmental determinants of health. Areas of interest include:

  • Epidemiology, applied epidemiology, surveillance and biostatistics.
  • Prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases.
  • Health promotion, health education, behavioural interventions and community participation.
  • Environmental health, sanitation, climate-related health risks and occupational health and safety.
  • Public health nutrition, food security and nutritional interventions.
  • Reproductive, maternal, neonatal, child and adolescent health.
  • Health policy, governance, law, ethics, administration and financing.
  • Health systems, service access, quality improvement and programme evaluation.
  • Public health emergency preparedness, disaster risk reduction and community resilience.
  • Health inequalities, social determinants of health, vulnerable populations and universal health coverage.
  • Digital health, health information systems and implementation research with clear public health relevance.

4. Interdisciplinary and Translational Research

The journal welcomes interdisciplinary investigations linking nursing and public health with medicine, midwifery, health economics, social sciences, education, environmental studies, health informatics and health policy, provided that the research question makes a substantive contribution to nursing practice, population health or healthcare systems. Studies evaluating implementation, feasibility, acceptability, equity, cost-effectiveness, patient-reported outcomes or real-world effectiveness are particularly relevant when their methods are transparent and conclusions proportionate to the evidence.

5. Manuscript Categories

Subject to the manuscript categories enabled in the journal’s submission system, JNPH considers original quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods research; systematic and scoping reviews; rigorous narrative or integrative reviews; short research reports; and methodological studies. Relevant scholarly commentaries, practice reports and letters may be considered when expressly supported by the journal’s current author guidelines or approved by the Editorial Board. Case reports and clinical case studies require appropriate patient consent and a clear contribution beyond routine clinical description.

6. Research Quality and Reporting Expectations

All submissions must present a clearly defined research question, a meaningful contribution to knowledge and a methodologically sound approach. Authors should describe study design, participant selection, data sources, analytical methods, limitations and implications with sufficient transparency for critical evaluation. Appropriate reporting guidance should be followed where relevant, including CONSORT for randomised trials, STROBE for observational studies, PRISMA for systematic reviews, COREQ or SRQR for qualitative research, and CARE for case reports.

Studies involving human participants must comply with applicable research ethics requirements. Authors must report ethics approval or a justified exemption, informed consent where required, and safeguards for privacy and confidentiality. Clinical trials should comply with applicable registration and reporting requirements. Patient-identifiable information must not be disclosed without appropriate consent and safeguards.

7. Manuscripts Outside the Journal’s Scope

JNPH does not ordinarily consider manuscripts that lack a substantive nursing or public health question; present purely commercial or technical content without demonstrated health relevance; rely on unsupported clinical claims; report routine service descriptions without meaningful analysis; or provide insufficient methodological information to evaluate findings. Mere geographical relevance, a large sample or a topical subject does not compensate for a lack of scientific contribution. Submissions containing fabricated data, plagiarism, undisclosed duplicate publication or other serious ethical breaches are subject to the journal’s publication ethics policies.

8. Audience and Scholarly Impact

The journal serves nurses, public health practitioners, academics, students, health-service leaders, policymakers and interdisciplinary researchers. Published work should communicate its implications responsibly, distinguish observed findings from recommendations, and avoid overstating causality or clinical benefit. Contributions that improve nursing care, population health, service quality, health equity and evidence-informed decision-making are encouraged.

9. Editorial Assessment and Policy Review

Manuscripts undergo initial editorial screening and independent peer review in accordance with the journal’s Peer Review Policy. The Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board retain responsibility for determining scope fit, scholarly quality and editorial decisions. The Aims and Scope statement will be reviewed periodically to reflect developments in nursing, public health, research integrity and healthcare priorities. Any substantive changes should be approved by the Editorial Board and communicated on the journal website.

Official Aims and Scope Statement

Journal of Nursing and Public Health publishes original, methodologically rigorous and ethically responsible scholarship that advances nursing care, population health, health promotion, disease prevention and healthcare systems. The journal welcomes relevant quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, evidence-synthesis and interdisciplinary research with clear implications for clinical practice, education, policy or community health.
