Policy introduction
The Journal of Nursing and Public Health publishes scholarship on nursing practice, healthcare delivery, epidemiology and population health. This policy sets out the editorial requirements and recommended procedures necessary to protect research integrity, patient welfare, scholarly quality and transparent publishing. It applies to relevant authors, editors, reviewers and other participants in the publication process.
1. Purpose and scope
This policy protects the scholarly record by correcting or flagging published nursing and public-health research when credible errors, ethical concerns or unreliable findings arise. Editorial action is based on evidence, not the desire to punish researchers. Relevant COPE guidance informs decisions.
2. Corrections
Publish a clearly labelled correction when a specific error affects the record but does not invalidate principal conclusions. Examples include incorrect numeric values, a mislabelled clinical table, author metadata or a limited analytical mistake. The notice should state what changed and link to the original article.
3. Expressions of concern
An expression of concern may be issued where serious credible concerns remain unresolved, the evidence is inconclusive or a necessary institutional investigation is delayed. The notice must avoid asserting misconduct as fact before findings exist and be linked to the article.
4. Retraction grounds
Retraction may be justified by unreliable findings from major error or fabrication/falsification; serious plagiarism; unethical research, fabricated approval or consent; compromised peer review; or major redundant publication. In clinical research the impact on patient safety and clinical guidance must be assessed promptly.
5. Fair procedure
Editors assess evidence and invite authors to respond where feasible, consult independent experts or institutions when necessary, manage conflicts and record the rationale. Author agreement is not always necessary for warranted corrections to the record. Appeals based on new evidence or procedural irregularity may be considered.
6. Notice content and visibility
Correction, concern and retraction notices must be dated, freely available, unambiguously titled and linked bidirectionally to the article where possible. Retraction notices must explain the reasons and who is retracting; original content should normally remain accessible, watermarked or clearly flagged as retracted.
7. DOI, archive and licensing
Metadata and DOI records should reflect the updated status where supported. Silent replacement or deletion is prohibited except in exceptional circumstances involving legal duties, participant privacy or serious harm; reasons and residual metadata should be preserved where lawful.
8. Editorial responsibility
The Editor-in-Chief has final publication-record responsibility subject to independent handling when conflicted. The publisher supports notices and infrastructure without directing scholarly judgements. The policy is reviewed periodically.
Implementation and governance
The Editorial Board should approve this policy, incorporate it into the Author Guidelines and applicable OJS submission or editorial workflows, and review it periodically. Any additional operational requirements described as recommendations must be verified and implemented before being represented as active journal practice.
