Policy introduction
The Journal of Nursing and Public Health publishes scholarship on nursing practice, healthcare delivery, epidemiology and population health. This policy sets out the editorial requirements and recommended procedures necessary to protect research integrity, patient welfare, scholarly quality and transparent publishing. It applies to relevant authors, editors, reviewers and other participants in the publication process.
1. Scope and selection principles
The journal considers nursing science and practice, patient safety, community and public health, epidemiology, health promotion, maternal and child health, health services and policy, biostatistics, and related disciplines. Every article type requires clear relevance, originality, adequate scientific methods and research ethics compliance.
2. Original Research Articles
Original qualitative, quantitative or mixed-methods clinical, community, epidemiological and health-services studies. Recommended structure: Title; structured Abstract; Introduction; Methods; Results; Discussion; Conclusion; declarations; References. Methods must describe design, setting, sampling, eligibility, instruments, analysis, ethics approval and consent, and appropriate bias control.
Randomised trials should follow CONSORT and provide registration details; observational studies should follow STROBE; qualitative studies should use COREQ or SRQR as appropriate; diagnostic accuracy studies should use STARD; and prediction models should use appropriate current reporting guidance. These are reporting aids, not substitutes for sound methods.
3. Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses
Evidence syntheses must specify a focused question, protocol/registration where applicable, search strings, databases and search dates, eligibility criteria, screening, risk-of-bias assessment and synthesis methods. PRISMA 2020 is recommended. Narrative/integrative reviews are eligible only when their scope, selection logic, critical synthesis and contribution are clear.
4. Short Reports and Brief Communications
Concise, original and methodologically defensible results of focused clinical, epidemiological, community-health or service evaluations. Shortness does not relax requirements for ethics approval, analytical transparency, limitations or reporting completeness. Preliminary results must be labelled accurately.
5. Methodological and Implementation Research
Studies developing or validating instruments, nursing interventions, quality improvement systems, surveillance approaches, or public-health implementation methods must demonstrate novelty, appropriate validation and usefulness. For quality improvement use SQUIRE; for implementation studies describe context, fidelity, adaptation, reach and outcomes.
6. Case Reports and Case Series
Clinical case reports or case series may be considered only when a genuinely novel clinical or nursing lesson is established and the editorial scope permits them. Use CARE guidance where relevant, secure explicit patient publication consent, remove unnecessary identifiers and do not overstate causal inference. Routine clinical anecdotes are insufficient.
7. Preparation and declarations
Authors must use the current official journal template and referencing instructions. A clear abstract, relevant keywords, legible editable tables, figure permissions, complete citations and data availability statement are expected as applicable. Human research needs ethics committee approval or documented exemption and appropriate informed consent. Animal studies, if within scope, require appropriate approval and reporting standards.
8. Submission and editorial classification
Authors select the most suitable OJS article section. The editor may reclassify a manuscript after consultation. All research categories undergo initial screening and appropriate independent peer review. Proposed categories not yet configured in OJS must be approved by the Editorial Board before activation.
Implementation and governance
The Editorial Board should approve this policy, incorporate it into the Author Guidelines and applicable OJS submission or editorial workflows, and review it periodically. Any additional operational requirements described as recommendations must be verified and implemented before being represented as active journal practice.
