Policy introduction

The Journal of Nursing and Public Health publishes scholarship on nursing practice, healthcare delivery, epidemiology and population health. This policy sets out the editorial requirements and recommended procedures necessary to protect research integrity, patient welfare, scholarly quality and transparent publishing. It applies to relevant authors, editors, reviewers and other participants in the publication process.

1. Scope and ethical framework

This policy applies to all original investigations, reviews, short reports, methodological papers and other scholarly contributions in nursing and public health. The journal adopts the four ICMJE authorship criteria as its operational eligibility rule and uses the CRediT taxonomy to describe individual contributions. COPE guidance informs authorship dispute management.

2. Four mandatory authorship criteria

To qualify as an author, an individual must satisfy ALL four criteria: (i) substantial contribution to conception or design, or acquisition, analysis or interpretation of data; (ii) drafting the work or critically reviewing it for important intellectual content; (iii) final approval of the version to be published; and (iv) agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work and ensure integrity questions are appropriately investigated and resolved.

Substantial contributions may include study protocol design, clinical or community-based data interpretation, epidemiological analysis, and intervention evaluation. Clinical rank, funding, recruitment support, routine care, general supervision or data collection alone do not establish authorship. All qualifying contributors should be offered the opportunity to meet the remaining criteria.

3. Contributor roles (CRediT)

Each submission must include a truthful contributions statement identifying relevant roles: Conceptualization; Methodology; Software; Validation; Formal analysis; Investigation; Resources; Data curation; Writing – original draft; Writing – review & editing; Visualization; Supervision; Project administration; and Funding acquisition. CRediT roles do not in themselves confer authorship.

Example: A.B. – Conceptualization, Methodology, Writing – original draft; C.D. – Investigation, Formal analysis, Writing – review & editing; E.F. – Supervision, Validation, Writing – review & editing. All authors approved the final manuscript and accept accountability.

4. Corresponding author and author order

The corresponding author obtains written agreement to author order, verifies names, affiliations, ORCID iDs, ethics approval, informed consent, trial registration where required, conflicts, funding, data availability and AI declarations, and coordinates submission and responses. All authors remain individually accountable. Equal first contributions and group authorship must be explicitly identified and justified.

5. Non-author assistance and prohibited practices

Individuals providing routine patient recruitment, clinical support, funding, language editing or administrative help without meeting all four criteria should be acknowledged with their permission. Gift, guest, honorary, ghost and purchased authorship are prohibited. AI tools cannot be authors. Material AI use must be disclosed.

6. Authorship changes and disputes

Requests to add, remove or reorder authors before or after acceptance must provide a reason, revised CRediT statement, and written agreement of all affected authors, including those added or removed. Changes after publication require a transparent correction where appropriate. Editors may suspend processing; unresolved disputes should be referred to the relevant institutions rather than decided on unverified competing accounts.

7. Author identification and implementation

All authors must provide correct names, affiliations, country, contact details and ORCID iDs where available; the editorial office should encourage ORCID registration and integrate identifiers into OJS. Authorship and contribution statements must be checked before acceptance, and changes documented.

Implementation and governance

The Editorial Board should approve this policy, incorporate it into the Author Guidelines and applicable OJS submission or editorial workflows, and review it periodically. Any additional operational requirements described as recommendations must be verified and implemented before being represented as active journal practice.
