Abstract

This community service program aimed to improve environmental management and cage sanitation practices among broiler duck (bebek pedaging) farmers in Taba Pasmah Village, Talang Empat Subdistrict, Central Bengkulu Regency, Bengkulu Province. Duck farming in this area is still managed conventionally, with poor cage ventilation, high stocking density, and inadequate waste management, which negatively affect duck growth performance and increase disease risk. The program was implemented through a gotong royong (mutual cooperation) approach involving socialization, hands-on training, and collective cage renovation together with local farmers. Activities included cleaning and disinfecting cages, improving ventilation and lighting, adjusting stocking density, and organizing manure management through simple composting. A pre-test and post-test questionnaire was used to measure farmers' understanding before and after the activity. The results show a significant increase in farmers' knowledge and practice regarding healthy cage management, ranging from 65% to 95% across the assessed aspects, along with improved cage cleanliness and duck comfort. Farmers reported that the ducks appeared more active and feed consumption was more efficient after the intervention. This program demonstrates that a participatory gotong royong approach effectively enhances the capacity of small-scale farmers in environmental and cage management, contributing to the optimal growth of broiler ducks and sustainable livestock practices in rural communities.
