EDITORIAL POLICY • Proposed for Editorial Board approval

Policy framework

This policy governs scholarly submissions and publications in midwifery, reproductive health, maternal and newborn care. It should be read with the journal’s Author Guidelines, editorial ethics requirements and applicable law. Operational measures proposed here take effect only after approval and technical implementation by the Editorial Board and publisher.

1. Policy objectives

GenAI and AI-assisted systems may facilitate language refinement, organisation, code support and exploratory literature work, but must not substitute for human scholarly judgement, clinical expertise, research ethics or responsibility for published claims. This policy applies to authors, editors and reviewers.

2. Permitted assistance

Subject to critical verification and appropriate disclosure, authors may use AI for language improvement, translation, outline preparation, coding support and non-empirical conceptual illustrations. AI-assisted statistical programmes and analytical methods must be reported with enough detail for independent evaluation. Primary sources and references must be checked directly.

3. Prohibited uses

Authors must not generate fictitious patient interviews, maternal outcomes, neonatal observations, clinical trial results, ethics approvals, informed consent, references, images or diagnostic results. GenAI must not be used to conceal plagiarism, falsify adverse-event reports or produce misleading clinical advice or evidence.

4. Privacy and safety

Identifiable patient records, ultrasound images, obstetric case notes, reproductive histories and other sensitive health data must not be uploaded to unauthorised AI services. Any processing of protected patient data requires legitimate authority, institutional safeguards and compliance with applicable privacy and research requirements.

5. Authorship and responsibility

AI tools cannot be authors or co-authors. Human authors remain responsible for the accuracy, originality, safety and scientific validity of all content and must assess AI-generated output for bias, hallucinated references, incorrect clinical guidance and fabricated data.

6. Mandatory disclosure

For substantive use, include a Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies before References, identifying tool, provider, use, affected sections and verification. Research methods involving AI must also be described in Methods. Suggested non-use declaration: “The authors declare that no generative AI tools were used in the preparation or analysis of this manuscript.”

7. Editors and peer reviewers

Editors and reviewers must not input confidential manuscripts, patient material, editorial correspondence or reviewer reports into external AI systems without explicit approval and adequate safeguards. AI must not replace independent peer review or editorial decisions; authorised use must be disclosed and documented.

8. Assessment and violations

The journal will assess suspected violations on verifiable evidence, not AI-detector scores alone. Responses may include clarification, revision, rejection, correction or retraction as justified by the circumstances and the misconduct policy.
