EDITORIAL POLICY • Proposed for Editorial Board approval
Policy framework
This policy governs scholarly submissions and publications in midwifery, reproductive health, maternal and newborn care. It should be read with the journal’s Author Guidelines, editorial ethics requirements and applicable law. Operational measures proposed here take effect only after approval and technical implementation by the Editorial Board and publisher.
1. Purpose and scope
The journal recognises authorship as both credit for intellectual work and accountability for the integrity of research in midwifery, obstetrics, reproductive health, maternal and newborn care and related disciplines. This policy applies to all manuscript types and all authors, including multidisciplinary clinical and public-health teams.
2. Four authorship criteria
Each author must satisfy all four ICMJE criteria: (1) make a substantial contribution to conception or design, or acquisition, analysis or interpretation of data; (2) draft the work or critically revise important intellectual content; (3) approve the final version; and (4) agree to accountability for all aspects of the work, ensuring concerns about accuracy or integrity are investigated and resolved. Clinical seniority, department leadership, provision of funding, routine recruitment or general supervision alone does not qualify for authorship.
3. CRediT contribution reporting
A contribution statement must identify the actual roles of each author using the 14 CRediT terms: Conceptualization, Methodology, Software, Validation, Formal analysis, Investigation, Resources, Data curation, Writing – original draft, Writing – review & editing, Visualization, Supervision, Project administration and Funding acquisition. A role may be shared; one author may have several roles. CRediT describes contributions but does not override the four authorship requirements.
4. Corresponding author and author order
The authors must agree on author order before submission. The corresponding author coordinates approvals, accurate names and affiliations, ORCID iDs where available, ethical approval and consent statements, trial registration when applicable, funding and competing-interest disclosures, data availability and GenAI declarations. All authors approve material revisions and the version to be published; responsibility is collective rather than assigned solely to the corresponding author.
5. Acknowledgements and group authorship
People who assisted only with patient recruitment, translation, clinical access, administrative work, editing or funding should be acknowledged, with their permission, rather than listed as authors. Consortium submissions must identify accountable authors and distinguish named collaborators from authors. Gift, ghost, purchased and honorary authorship are prohibited.
6. Changes, disputes and corrections
Additions, removals or reordering of authors require a written rationale, updated contributions and written agreement from all affected authors. Processing may be suspended while disagreements are resolved; institutions, not editors, ordinarily adjudicate disputed contributions. After publication, verified changes require a linked correction and metadata update.
7. AI and implementation
Generative AI tools cannot qualify as authors. Substantive use must be declared and verified in accordance with the journal’s GenAI policy. The Editorial Board should include authorship attestations, the CRediT statement and disclosure requirements in OJS and the manuscript template, and investigate credible concerns under its misconduct policy.
Suggested author declaration
“All authors meet the journal’s authorship criteria, have approved the final manuscript and accept accountability for the integrity of the work. Individual contributions are detailed using CRediT.”
