Strategi Komunikasi Interpersonal Petugas Lapas Dalam Membina Narapidana Kasus Pencurian Di Bandar Lampung

Abstract

 This study examines the interpersonal communication strategies of correctional officers in guiding inmates convicted of theft at Class I Penitentiary Bandar Lampung. The research is motivated by the important role of communication between officers and inmates in shaping behavioral changes and supporting the rehabilitation process. Interpersonal communication is not only a tool for delivering information but also a method of fostering mutual understanding, trust, and positive interaction within the prison environment. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results indicate that officers apply several communication strategies such as empathy, persuasive approaches, personal counseling, and motivational dialogue to encourage inmates to reflect on their actions and improve social responsibility. Moreover, officers utilize interpersonal communication to reduce tension, resolve conflicts, and strengthen inmates’ readiness to reintegrate into society after serving their sentences. However, the study also finds challenges, including limited officer-to-inmate ratios and differences in inmates’ psychological conditions, which sometimes hinder effective communication. This research highlights that well-applied interpersonal communication strategies can significantly influence inmates’ character development and assist in achieving the objectives of correctional institutions in rehabilitation and reintegration.
