Abstract
Agricultural institutions have an important role in supporting the development of the agricultural sector. This study aims to analyze the role of farmer institutions in enhancing the competitiveness of coffee agribusiness in mountainous areas, focusing on farmer groups and agricultural cooperatives as part of the institutional structure. Farmer institutions, including farmer groups and cooperatives, play a strategic role in improving production quality, expanding market access, and strengthening the welfare of coffee farmers. The research method used is qualitative descriptive, with data collection through in-depth interviews and observations with coffee farmers in Pajar Bulan District Lahat Regency, East Java. The results of the study show that farmer groups and cooperatives play an important role in providing training in coffee cultivation, post-harvest processing, and collectivemarketing of coffee products. In addition, these institutions alsoserve as channels for access to capital and government assistance that support farmers' productivity. However, challenges remain regarding institutional management, low member participation, and market price fluctuations that affect farmers' incomes. This study suggests the need to strengthen the capacity of farmer institutions, increase member involvement in cooperative management, and develop coffee product diversification to enhance the competitiveness of the coffee agribusiness in mountainous areas.
