Optimization Of The University Network At Muhammadiyah University Of Bengkulu Using Network Simulator-2 (Ns-2)
Abstract
Campus internet networks have an important role in supporting academic activities and digital services at Universitas Muhammadiyah Bengkulu. The increasing number of users and internet traffic has caused a decline in network quality, especially in Quality of Service (QoS) parameters such as Delay, Throughput, Packet loss, and Jitter. These conditions often occur during lecture hours, e-learning access, streaming activities, and other campus activities. This study aims to determine the performance condition of the campus network, model the network using Network Simulator-2 (NS-2), and analyze the effect of implementing network optimization scenarios on improving network performance. The research method uses network simulation with the NS-2 application on Linux Ubuntu through 20 simulation scenarios consisting of 10 scenarios before optimization and 10 scenarios after optimization. The optimization parameters applied include reducing backbone Delay from 10 ms to 1 ms, increasing queue buffer capacity from 50 to 200, implementing the RED queue method, configuring static nodes, and increasing the data rate to 54 Mbps. The results showed that the network condition before optimization had an average QoS index of 1.70 or 42.5% categorized as poor. The highest Delay reached 3103.48 ms, the lowest Throughput was 8.55%, the highest Packet loss reached 91.45%, and the highest Jitter reached 1619.48 ms. After optimization, the average QoS index increased to2.37 or 59.25% categorized as less satisfactory. The best Delay decreased to 6.05 ms, Throughput increased up to 100%, Packet loss decreased to 0%, and the best Jitter reached 3.01 ms. These results indicate that optimization using NS-2 is able to improve the quality of campus network services.
