Abstract

This article aims to examine the influence of traditional Batak Toba leadership on the leadership of the Huria Kristen Batak Protestan (HKBP) Church and its relevance in addressing the contemporary challenges of church leadership. Leadership within Batak Toba society is understood not merely as a structural function but also as a cultural value rooted in the Dalihan Na Tolu system and the concept of sahala as the source of authority, legitimacy, and the moral responsibility of a leader. Other cultural values, such as hasangapon, hamoraon, and hagabeon, also shape a leadership character oriented toward honor, prosperity, and the sustainability of the community. Throughout its historical development, HKBP adopted an ecclesiastical leadership system introduced by the Rheinische Missionsgesellschaft (RMG) missionaries while simultaneously undergoing a process of contextualization with Batak culture, resulting in a leadership model that integrates both theological and cultural dimensions. On the one hand, traditional leadership values strengthen authority, solidarity, and participation within the life of the church. On the other hand, they also present challenges, including tendencies toward authoritarianism, the influence of kinship networks, internal church politics, and increasing demands for transparency and accountability in the modern era. Therefore, the concept of sahala needs to be reinterpreted as a gift from God manifested through integrity, spirituality, humility, and servant leadership. Consequently, HKBP leadership is expected to embody a contextual and transformative model of leadership that is rooted in Batak culture, grounded in the Gospel, and responsive to contemporary social changes and the needs of the church. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research method through literature review, interviews, observations, and interpretative analysis to explore the dynamics of integrating traditional Batak leadership with ecclesiastical leadership within HKBP.
