Telepharmacy As An Innovative Approach In Hypertension Management Among Geriatric Patients: A Narrative Literature Review
Abstract
Hypertension is a major chronic disease in the geriatric population, with management challenges arising from physical limitations and access to healthcare services. Telepharmacy offers a remote pharmaceutical service solution based on information technology. This analysis aims to assess the impact of telepharmacy on hypertension management in the elderly. A literature search was conducted through ScienceDirect and PubMed using SPIDER criteria for studies from the last 10 years with relevant keywords. Telepharmacy interventions (such as telemonitoring, mobile health, video/phone calls, SMS, and web platforms) effectively improve blood pressure control, medication adherence, self-efficacy, knowledge, and self-management, as well as significantly reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure. However, implementation is hampered by low digital literacy, limited internet access, and technological barriers in the elderly. In conclusion, telepharmacy has great potential as an effective, innovative strategy to support hypertension management in geriatric patients.
