Abstract

Schizoaffective disorder is commonly associated with auditory hallucinations and mood dysregulation, which significantly reduce quality of life. Non-pharmacological interventions that support emotional regulation and reduce perceptual disturbances are needed. This case study examines the effectiveness of drawing therapy in improving mood and reducing auditory hallucinations in a patient with schizoaffective disorder. A descriptive case study design was applied involving a 30-year-old male diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, manic type, at the West Java Provincial Mental Hospital. Data were collected through interviews, direct observation, and review of medical records. Drawing therapy was administered for four consecutive days, with each session lasting 20–30 minutes. Changes in hallucination frequency, behavioral responses, and emotional expression were documented using a structured observation sheet. Following the intervention, the frequency of auditory hallucinations decreased from 4–5 episodes per day to none. The patient demonstrated improved concentration, emotional stability, motivation, interpersonal engagement, and more adaptive nonverbal behavior, indicating enhanced mood regulation.Drawing therapy was effective in improving mood, reducing auditory hallucination symptoms, and supporting psychological well-being in a patient with schizoaffective disorder. This intervention shows potential as a complementary therapeutic modality for patients with schizoaffective disorder experiencing auditory hallucinations.
