Design And Development Of An Android-Based Automated Book Lending System Using Finite State Automata (FSA) And A Rule-Based Algorithm At The Bengkulu City Library And Archives Office
Abstract
Manual book circulation management at the Bengkulu City Library and Archives Office frequently results in stock discrepancies, complex record-keeping, and a high incidence of overdue book returns. This study aimed to develop an Android-based automated library application integrating QR Code scanning to improve the efficiency and accuracy of circulation operations. The system employed Deterministic Finite Automata (DFA) to control book and transaction status transitions deterministically, a Rule-Based Algorithm to validate lending business rules, and atomic Cloud Firestore transactions to ensure data consistency based on ACID principles. In addition, a Dual Notification Strategy was implemented, consisting of direct notifications to administrators and automated local reminders scheduled for two days (H-2) and one day (H-1) before the due date. Black Box testing demonstrated a 100% functional success rate, with an average transaction response time of less than 3 seconds per scan. The results indicate that the developed system successfully minimizes human error, eliminates the risk of duplicate transactions, and provides practical support for the accountable and sustainable digitalization of library services.
